Boating Safety Tips on Illinois Waters

As warmer weather rolls into the Chicagoland area, Illinois boaters eagerly head to their favorite lakes, rivers, or reservoirs for some recreation and relaxation. Boating is a great way to enjoy nature’s natural beauty; however, oftentimes, safety takes a backseat.

Boating Safety Laws and Common Risks on Illinois Waters

There are close to 300 public lakes and rivers, making Illinois a popular destination for both veteran and rookie boaters. As one can imagine, with increased boating traffic comes an increased risk of accidents. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources recognizes that most boating deaths occur from people not wearing life jackets or operating vessels under the influence of alcohol. Needless to say, always wear life jackets and do not drink and drive, even on water.

In Illinois, anyone 25 years or older must complete a state-approved boating safety course to operate any motorboat with more than 10 horsepower. It is easy to find courses both in-person and online through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

Here are some key boating safety tips for individuals and operators taking to the water this summer:

  1. Wear a life jacket. Illinois law requires all children under the age of 13 years old to wear a life jacket while aboard any watercraft. Candidly, everyone should wear a life jacket regardless of swimming ability.
  2. Bring safety gear. Include a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, throwable flotation device, water, and/or flashlights for emergencies.
  3. Inspect your boat. Make sure your vessel is equipped with good working lights, proper steering, and you have adequate fuel and oil before each trip.  Also, check the motor to ensure it is in good working condition.
  4. Check the weather. Let’s face it, this is Chicago. It is not unusual to experience two, three, or even four seasons in one day. Conditions on Illinois lakes can change quickly. Always check the forecast before setting out and watch for weather warnings.
  5. Do not drink and drive. Boating under the influence is illegal in Illinois.  More importantly, it is also extremely dangerous. Like in any other walk of life, alcohol and/or drugs can impair judgment and balance. If you have ever been on the water, everyone needs good judgment and balance.
  6. Obtain an orange flag. In Illinois, the operator of any watercraft that is towing a person or persons shall display a bright orange flag, which shall be displayed at the highest point of the boat.

There are many boaters in Illinois who do not understand some of the challenges to Illinois waters. For example, on holidays and weekends, popular lakes and rivers get crowded quickly. Always maintain a safe speed and avoid reckless maneuvers in crowded areas. Similarly, Lake Michigan can experience sudden and dense fog at any time. Therefore, common boating traffic on Lake Michigan requires extreme caution. When in doubt, utilize a marine radio. Finally, in Illinois, with all of our access to the variety of rivers, currents on rivers can be treacherous. Stay clear of restricted areas and submerged hazards.
