Illinois Task Force

In announcing her appointment, Senate President John Cullerton stated, “I have selected Elizabeth Kaveny as my appointment to the Illinois Move Over Task Force due to her years of dedication to seeking justice for first responders, tollway and construction workers who have been injured or killed roadside due to the negligent conduct of truck and automobile drivers. She has also testified in Springfield previously in favor of legislation imposing harsher penalties against the trucking industry when such tragedies occur.  I am confident she will fight to find methods to improve our workers’ safety and truly make a difference.”

This auspicious honor is a result of Governor J.B. Pritzker’s recent bill to strengthen Scott’s Law, which hopes to help prevent injuries and death of emergency responders and highway workers.

The two-part law proposes raising fines for violators of Scott’s Law, also known as the “move over” law, and increasing the criminal penalty to a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in jail. The other portion of the bill involved the creation of the Move Over Task Force, dedicated to studying the violations.

The task force includes several city and state leaders, including the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Transportation.
