April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month
“April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month,” says Jeffrey Kroll, Partner with Kaveny +Kroll Trial Attorneys (www.kavenykroll.com) in Chicago. “Unfortunately, we have been witness through our work as advocates for clients who have been injured and/or killed by the actions of a distracted driver.” The national distracted driving effort focuses on ways to change the behavior of drivers through legislation, enforcement, public awareness, and education.
Distracted driving refers to being ‘plugged in’ via mobile phone, radio or other sources that draw attention from the road. In 2018, 2841 people were killed as the result of a distracted driver. Victims were other drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists. It is estimated that over 400,000 people are injured in distracted driving cases each year.
“In this time of pandemic, it’s easy to get distracted by the news, and even our own thoughts as we try and race around getting things done as quickly as possible while maintaining social distance,” says Kroll. “Yet, we are abdicating responsibility in an area where we truly can make a difference. Just like social distancing, the attention you pay while on the road can easily save your life or someone else’s.”
Kroll cautions all those traveling whether by car, bicycle or on foot, to take special care, time and attention in order to avoid distracted driving accidents. “The last place you want to end up is in an emergency room, being treated for injuries suffered in a preventable accident,” says Kroll. “It’s worth the extra few minutes to turn off your phone, turn down the radio and tune in to the road, now more than ever.”
