Rising Fatality Collisions

by Jeffrey J. Kroll

Recently, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published their Annual Traffic Crash Data for the year 2020.  When comparing it to 2019 data, the 2020 fatalities were the highest since 2017.

The car crash attorneys at Kaveny + Kroll have seen, firsthand, individuals with catastrophic injuries and/or family members that have lost a loved one due to the negligent conduct of a vehicle operator.  Based on the latest Annual Traffic Crash Data compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, it is alarming to see the various areas where motor vehicle victim fatalities have increased.  For example, from 2020 as compared to 2019, the following increases in traffic fatalities occurred:

  • Bicycle fatalities up 2.9%
  • Motorcycle fatalities up 11%
  • Alcohol related crash fatalities up 14%
  • Speed-related fatalities up 17%
  • Hit-and-run fatalities up 26%

While these numbers are alarming, it is not surprising.  The automobile accident attorneys at Kaveny + Kroll have represented families where the devastation on a motor vehicle collision can impact a family.  What these statistics do not demonstrate, and what we may never know is actually how many of these deaths are related to distracted driving.  Statistically, we now know distracted driving is a major cause of motor vehicle collisions, however, most drivers will not admit that they were distracted while driving.  Distracted driving is a major problem in our society and often leads to countless traffic deaths and catastrophic injuries.
